Mario Gomez is hurt to have not been part of Germany’s World Cup winning squad but now wants to return to full form and fitness with Fiorentina.

The forward missed large periods of last season after twice suffering knee ligament damage, costing him a place in Brazil.

“I am very happy for my country and my teammates, they were the best team,” Gomez told ViolaChannel of his compatriots’ triumph at the Maracana last night.

“They have worked on this goal for many years and it is a deserved victory.

“It hurts to not be there with them because I have been with them for seven years. But I still have time to win a World Cup or European Championship, so I want to play very well in the Viola shirt over the next four years. The first aim is to play in Euro 2016.”

Gomez then discussed his club side’s ambitions for the season ahead, stressing his desire to make up for lost time by having an excellent campaign this time around.

“We want to improve and get into the Champions League. That is my target but also the target of everyone else.

“After last year, which was terrible for me, I have a great desire to do well and play football, because that is my life. This can be my year.”
