Captain Papu Gomez believes Atalanta have ‘made a name for ourselves’ in Europe and says he wants to stay in Bergamo beyond his contract.

The Argentine forward, who in the same interview revealed Josip Ilicic ‘had coronavirus’, thinks the quarter-final run in the Champions League last term means Atalanta are not a surprise anymore.

“Last year we were a surprise, but now we have made a name for ourselves in the Champions League and we can make life difficult for any team,” Gomez told TyC Sports.

“We know we are risking something with our game, but we have achieved results by attacking. We bring many players in the area and we have the qualities to score many goals.

Gomez contract with La Dea expires in June 2023 and he hopes to stay in Bergamo.

“I have three years left on my contract,” he added. “In February I will be 33. I certainly want to continue living here in Bergamo.

“I’m very well and I will have a place in the club in the future.”
