Italy and Genoa striker Alberto Gilardino has outlined his hopes for the New Year.

“I want to start 2014 well and I want to do well in the Genoa jersey,” he told Sky Sport Italia after rumours of a January bid from Toronto.

“We want to make a good start when the football resumes and the next five months will be very important for the growth of the team.

“This is a squad which has a lot of quality.”

Genoa are looking good to survive after a problematic start to the campaign and Gila has been important thanks to his seven goals in 17 games so far.

“Getting picked by Italy for the World Cup is certainly an objective of mine,” the former Parma man continued.

“Brazil 2014 would be my third World Cup and the next six months will be very important for me in terms of form and fitness.”
