Fiorentina boss Delio Rossi has explained why he didn’t stop the club from selling Alberto Gilardino to Genoa.

The striker completed his medical in the port city yesterday and will soon be confirmed as a Marassi player.

“He was always at my disposal, but a light inside of him had gone out,” the tactician stated on Tuesday.

“He always behaved correctly, but I reluctantly gave my OK to the move. In agreement with the club, we gave him the chance to express himself at another outfit.

“I’ve been a Coach for some time and I realised that Gilardino wanted to leave. I didn’t see why we should force him to stay.

“The boy has always behaved in the correct manner though and he should be respected for what he achieved in this city.”

The World Cup winner, 29, scored 59 goals for the Viola in all competitions since his 2008 move from Milan.

“Now we’ll see what the market has to offer,” continued Rossi when asked about a replacement for Gilardino.

“If we have to take a player for the sake of signing someone then I would be happy with remaining with the players I already have.”
