Alberto Gilardino is confident Italy will be ready for the Confederations Cup. “It’s only normal that it takes a little patience.”

The Azzurri are still forming their unit with many young players, but veteran Gila set up the equaliser for Marco Verratti in a 1-1 draw with Holland.

“This team is full of youngsters, so it is a positive Italy looking forward. We faced a strong side today who know how to play the ball well, but we got the draw and by pushing a bit more we could’ve even won tonight.

“I am very happy to be back in the Nazionale, as it had been a long time since I’d played with this jersey. I tried to help the team and gave Verratti an assist for the goal, but the most important thing for me was to be part of the squad. It is important for me to wear the Italy shirt and it always will be.”

Italy had lost five consecutive friendlies and continued to struggle in Amsterdam, although in 2005 they did considerably better in non-competitive games.

“Perhaps that squad was a little more experienced. It’s only normal that it takes a little patience to get the best out of these players, who have immense quality,” argued Bologna striker Gilardino.

“I am sure the team will be in better shape for the Confederations Cup, as you can only prepare so well with a two-day training camp.”
