“In these last two matches, we have shown we weren’t up to the task,” a clearly disappointed Giampaolo commented post-match.
“When the game gets tough, it’s a mental problem. Inter played a great match.
“Today should have been the match where we revived ourselves. At the moment, Samp are showing their limitations.”
Giampaolo guided Samp to a tenth place finish last season, but the club then sold the likes of Milan Skriniar, Luis Muriel, Bruno Fernandes and Patrik Schick.
And the Marassi boss believes his side will continue to fall short of challenging Serie A’s top clubs as long as they continue to allow their prized assets to leave.
“There is a time when you have to take a leap in quality.
“There is a moment where you have to take the step up from being adolescent to being a man. If you don’t, you are destined to remain in limbo.
“If a team gets 48 points [last season], then sells their best players, how many points should they get the next year?
“It’s a challenge because the ‘sell but still improve your league position’ equation doesn’t work.
“Otherwise, we would live in another world, but that is the challenge for the players.
“If we don’t understand that, maybe next year we will sell our best players again, then how many points will we have to get? 70?”
