Marco Giampaolo felt Sampdoria “played on level terms with Inter and shouldn’t have lost” to a stoppage-time Marcelo Brozovic strike.

It was a chaotic game with three disallowed goals – two for the visitors and one for Gregoire Defrel – before Brozovic’s chest-and-volley at the 94th minute.

“This is a costly defeat,” the Coach told DAZN.

“We played on level terms with Inter and shouldn’t have lost, and I say that because I consider my players so highly. Perhaps we were penalised by playing a midweek game, as we don’t have the strength in depth that Inter do.

“I was struggling to make a third substitution, because Albin Ekdal was asking to come off and others were tired too. Inter introduced Ivan Perisic and Keita Balde Diao for Antonio Candreva and Matteo Politano, so all very strong players.

“This defeat hurts, because if Inter are strong, then we should feel that we are strong too. Now we have to recover some physical and mental energy.”

Samp played on Wednesday night in a rescheduled Week 1 fixture, drawing 1-1 with Fiorentina.

“I was concerned how we’d do over the 90 minutes and knew I had no other options in attack (because Gianluca Caprari, Dawid Kownacki and Riccardo Saponara were all out injured), so they’d end the game exhausted. Even Gaston Ramirez had a knee problem and I had to play him tonight.

“The fact we got to the 92nd minute in such good shape is impressive. It’s a pity, because getting a result in this game would’ve given us more prestige and status. I compliment my lads on their efforts, but it’s a defeat I am struggling to swallow.

“If we’d conceded two or three goals, I actually might’ve felt fewer regrets.”
