The Tuscan side emerged victorious thanks to Riccardo Saponara’s free-kick, and the Coach praised his team’s attitude.

“We’ll see if we’ve reached our goal at the end of the season,” Giampaolo told Sky after the match.

“Everything is definitely different from last year, and comparisons don’t interest me much. This was a game I was worried about in terms of energy, because we’d already given so much in Genoa.

“The lads did well, we suffered at the end as Palermo wanted to equalise at all costs. I have a squad with great quality, they’re very young and are all attentive and can still improve

“They know the score, and make it easier to fit in for those who arrived in the summer. They immediately understood my way of thinking.”

Giampaolo also discussed Saponara’s goal, which saw him pass the ball under the jumping Palermo wall and into the net.

“We tried to hide the ball from the goalkeeper by putting men in their wall. Saponara didn’t shoot with power, but did well to put the ball in the corner.”
