Samp and Genoa do battle at Marassi this weekend, amidst speculation that Giampaolo’s job is insecure after no wins since August, but the Coach feels his side can kick-start their season – and ease the pressure on his shoulders – by beating their arch-rivals.

“First of all, let me say that the initiative for the victims of the earthquake is commendable for the club and our fans,” he said at a Press conference.

“The derby? It’s fallen at the right time, the stakes are high but I’m glad that this challenge is happening tomorrow.

“Whoever’s doubtful should be back in time, including Silvestre. I’ve never participated in this derby, but I’ve seen it on TV and researched it with historical footage.

“We’ve prepared for the game well: we know the characteristics of our opponents and that it’ll be a messy game.

“My future? The club’s interests are above individual interests, the game is the only thing that counts, not my fate.

“In the week, we did what we could do to be prepared. This game escapes predictions, there’s no favourite for me, winning would put us back on track and where we deserve to be.

“The future is tomorrow, we’ll think about our next opponents later. The way our rivals play will ask more of us, the match itself even more.

“We must know how to play in the dirt, but without sacrificing what we’ve done in recent months.

“Starting XI? I’m saying nothing, I have one more night to think it through.”
