Marco Giampaolo is pleased to have been appointed by “excellent club” Sampdoria.
The Coach has replaced Vincenzo Montella on the Marassi bench, and was officially presented to the media today.
“I’ve always considered Sampdoria to be an excellent club from the outside,” Giampaolo acknowledged.
“I’m very happy to be here, we’ll get to know each other. It was unexpected when sporting director [Carlo] Osti called me saying that if Montella were to leave he’d want me here.

“I’m very happy to be here, we’ll get to know each other. It was unexpected when sporting director [Carlo] Osti called me saying that if Montella were to leave he’d want me here.
“Now we have to work with the resources we have available, and everything that goes with the club.
“I know the team a little bit, I’ve coached [Fabio] Quagliarella and [Matias] Silvestre but those were different times, so we’ll see in the coming days how things are.
“I had other interviews in this period, but once I realised that coming here was a possibility, I was very happy to come here.
“The market for Coaches is like the one for players and is constantly evolving, but the first call I received this summer was from Samp.”
Giampaolo was also asked whether he felt the squad needs further reinforcement.
“Going forward some things have already been done, [Ante] Budimir has come in and he’s a good reinforcement. We’ll need to do something in midfield and in defence we’re lacking a left-back but we’ll discuss this stuff in the coming days.
“I’m thinking of names who reflect my philosophy, I can give some idea of characteristics but I’ll stop there. I like good players who make themselves available and like to work.
“We’ve got a few too many, as there are 30, so next week I’ll make my assessments and put a squad together for the training camp.”
