Club President Massimo Ferrero has urged Cassano to leave, but FantAntonio remained at Marassi after the summer transfer window.

“The Cassano stuff is over my head,” Giampaolo acknowledged, speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport.

“It’s a choice borne of club politics, and I deal with the coaching. He’s been irreproachable since I’ve Coached him.

“I deliberately treated him worse than the others, to fire him up. Even now we often chat, he’s extremely intelligent, he works things about before others and he understands a lot about football.

“He can become a great Coach.”
