Juventus’ Emanuele Giaccherini is happy with the way he played in Italy’s 2-1 win over Mexico on Sunday.

The former Cesena man, as well as Claudio Marchisio, was used in support of lone striker Mario Balotelli in a 4-3-2-1.

“The Coach asked me to attack the space in front of me because that is how you cause the Mexico defenders problems,” the 28-year-old explained after their opening Confederations Cup tie.

“Marchisio and I played in roles which required us to work very hard and give a lot, as a result we lacked a little lucidity at times.

“I should have done better with two or three opportunities that came my way.”

Nevertheless, Giaccherini was widely considered to have impressed in a game which the Azzurri won thanks to goals from Andrea Pirlo and Balotelli.

“It is always nice to receive compliments,” he added. “I think I played well, we all did, even if we were led by Pirlo.

“We prepared the game well, we knew what we had to do.”

Giaccherini is a controversial selection by boss Cesare Prandelli given that he is not assured of regular first team football in Turin.

“There is always pressure here, whether your name is Giaccherini or Balotelli,” Giaccherini, who won his tenth cap last night in Rio, added.
