Steven Gerrard is hopeful that Luis Suarez will make his comeback from injury in time for Uruguay’s game with Italy.

The Liverpool striker has recently had to undergo knee surgery, but has insisted that he will be back in time for the tournament in Brazil.

But his club captain is keeping everything crossed that the goalscorer will miss their clash on June 19, but be back on the pitch in time for the South American nation to take on the Azzurri on June 24.

“From a really selfish point of view it would really help England if he was not available, of course it would,” Gerrard told Sky Sports.

“I know him personally and I wish him well.”

"I just hope he's fit as soon as possible and certainly for when we go back with Liverpool.

“[It would be nice if he could return for] the final group game and then Liverpool. From a selfish point of view, he will understand that.

“I know missing the World Cup would absolutely kill him.

“We'll have to wait and see. I know he's a fighter and he'll do everything he can to be fit.”
