Coach Gian Piero Gasperini “can’t see Genoa among the teams fighting for salvation” in the second half of the season.

The Grifone haven’t won in any competition since beating Sassuolo at the end of November, a run which has seen them slip to 17th, just outside the relegation zone.

“The table has become ugly for us in the last 20 days,” Gasperini told journalists in his Press conference ahead of the derby with Sampdoria.

“It was compromised by those two home games [against Carpi and Bologna] which we’d rather not remember.

“Looking ahead, I can see this team improving in the second half of the season, and I can’t see Genoa among the teams fighting for salvation.

“We have to get points, but this is a team which will get out of this situation. That said, this game is a derby, and for everyone in our city it will be important.

“The table is very tight, it just takes a win or two to go from 16th to 10th place. We have to try to overcome our difficulties, and then we’ll be in a better position.

“Right now we have to think about the game against Sampdoria. These are two good teams who are experiencing some difficulties.

“Samp are more similar to last year, and are more used to these kind of games, but I don’t know if that’ll be an advantage.

“The emotion of playing a derby can be a good thing.”

Genoa have confirmed the signings of Luca Rigoni and Suso, and Gasperini believes they will help his squad.

“They’re good players, who have been on the sidelines for a long time, but they look good from a physical point of view.

“They’re available, but there’s still time before tomorrow night.”
