Lecce surprisingly sacked Fabio Liverani, who now becomes the favourite to take the Genoa job, as there are difficulties for Vincenzo Italiano from Spezia.

The Salentini made the shock announcement this afternoon, firing the coach who had taken them from Serie C to Serie A, narrowly missing out on safety on the final day of the season.

According to Sportitalia, the main reason is that not only was Liverani unconvinced by Lecce’s plans, but he also has an offer on the table from Genoa.

It was a head-to-head between Genoa and Lecce to avoid relegation, so this would be the second time in two years that Enrico Preziosi has hired the man he sent down – after Aurelio Andreazzoli from Empoli.

As for Sky Sport Italia, they report that Genoa are having difficulty with their other candidates, as Spezia – who face Frosinone in the Serie B promotion play-off tomorrow night – want €2m to release coach Italiano.

Another option is AEK Athens boss Massimo Carrera.

This would be a return for Liverani, who started his coaching career at the Genoa youth academy from 2011-13, then was promoted to the senior squad, but lasted only seven games.

He has since gained more experience at Leyton Orient, Ternana and above all Lecce.
