Gennaro Gattuso insists he doesn’t need to rule Milan with an iron fist because his squad has “great professionalism and commitment”.

“When a squad is training with great commitment and professionalism, when it respects the rules and is good together, then there’s no need,” Gattuso said in his Press conference ahead of the Empoli game.

“[Hakan] Calhanoglu wrote yesterday that we’re a family and that gives you an idea of the atmosphere in the dressing room.
“I don’t like having scripts or I’ll become less credible. If there are lads who behave badly, like last year with [Nikola] Kalinic, then I’ll intervene but right now I don’t need to say anything.
“They do everything I ask of them, so I don’t see the reason to have a strong manner. We might lack a bit of anger, but I need to understand if they have that in their characteristics.
“You need to be careful with anger, if you don’t use it properly you risk going down to 10-men and in that case it’s only damaging.”
Some have pointed to the fact the Diavolo have a young team as a source of their early season struggles.
“We’re not the only young team, we need to improve and we can’t look for excuses.
“Right now we can’t afford to wait, we need to understand what we need to do to score goals and not give up chances.
“In this moment I don’t feel a calmness, even at 2-0, and something can happen on the first chance.
“Right now we’re not a great team, we’re a team that plays nice football but still has many flaws to correct and we don’t have much time.
“When Leonardo says we need to change our mentality he’s not wrong, maybe that has to mean to play less well but always go looking for the win, even one we don’t deserve.
“To become a great team that’s what we need, we can become a team that can cause many others problems. We don’t have much time, and we need to put in something more on a personal level.”
Is there a lack of leaders in the dressing room?
“I’m not missing one,” Gattuso replied.
“Right now [Alessio] Romagnoli is ahead for his age, the armband has given him a lot of responsibility.
“[Lucas] Biglia is taciturn, but he knows when he was to talk. [Gonzalo] Higuain has leadership, [Pepe] Reina has been showing it for many years.”
Gattuso also discussed the danger posed by Empoli.
“It will be a very difficult game, Empoli are good on the ball. I’m not looking for a perfect game, but the win that we’re dying for.”
