Milan Coach Gennaro Gattuso admits Cagliari was “one of the worst defensive performances” of his tenure.

Milan Coach Gennaro Gattuso admits Cagliari was “one of the worst defensive performances” of his tenure.
The Rossoneri drew 1-1 in Sardinia on Sunday night, leaving them just outside of the Serie A relegation zone, albeit having played a game fewer than all but three sides.
“I saw the team’s disappointment today, but we have to keep working,” Gattuso told Milan TV.
“There wasn’t just a drop in intensity, the concepts were all wrong with too many errors in the movements between defence and midfield, not to mention technical and tactical deficiencies.
“We knew we’d be playing in a bear pit and we knew how good Cagliari were with the high press and with [Leonardo] Pavoletti.
“It seemed like we were surprised but that’s not true, that’s what we’re disappointed about.
“The home team can start strongly, but not like that. We didn't react and we didn’t have an answer, so we did well to recover.
“This is a team that can play well, but to become a real team we need to eliminate these defects right away.
“At both Napoli and Cagliari we made silly mistakes, what we’re doing is not enough. We have to be much better, even playing in places no-one likes to go we can be less beautiful but we need to give the impression that we’re not at risk.
“Provincial football has returned to a high level this year, they’re all well equipped and it’s not easy to go anywhere.
“Everyone tries to play and there’s no team that’s just improvising, everything is really organised. Improvisation is gone. It’s going to be a very difficult league.
“I like it when I see sad and angry faces, because they [the players] need to understand what it takes to wear this shirt and what this club is.
“We need to give a signal, we can’t give the impression that we’re improvising. That was one of the worst defensive performances since I’ve been Milan Coach, in terms of the line.
“That’s something that should make us think.”
