Gian Piero Gasperini believes it’s a race between Atalanta, Fiorentina and Sampdoria for the Europa League spot.

The Bergamo Boys destroyed Hellas Verona at the Bentegodi with a 5-0 triumph, including a hat-trick from usually inconsistent Slovenian Josip Ilicic.

“It’s a long road ahead, but as things stand it’s between us, Fiorentina and Sampdoria for a place in the Europa League,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“Ilicic has always been a great player, but this season he has been more consistent. He has the ability to score many goals, I always tell him that, as he has such strong technique. He’s decisive in the box.

“We thought this match would be more complicated, as Verona were coming off two consecutive victories, but we broke the deadlock early and that allowed us to play our game.

“In truth, I wasn’t entirely satisfied, as we wasted too many chances in the first half.”

It’s probably no coincidence that Atalanta’s Serie A form has picked up since their elimination from the Coppa Italia and Europa League.

“It did us good playing in these tournaments, as we gained experience, lifted the quality level and were able to play with a sense of confidence.

“We are always in the game to the end, even against the bigger clubs.”
