Atalanta Coach Gian Piero Gasperini stands by his transfer comments but “we have to look forward with what we have”.

The tactician caused a stir yesterday when he called the Orobici’s transfer campaign “very sad and small” and declared they may need “a better Coach” to repeat the success of the past two seasons.

“I’ve been training this team for 50 days,” Gasperini pointed out, speaking to Sky this afternoon.

“That’s enough for me to make my assessments, and based on that I said what I said. For me the market is closed, because there’s no more time.

“All we can do now is look forward with what we have, and face our commitments as well as possible.”

The first commitment is the Europa League, with the second leg against Hapoel Haifa tomorrow.

“We’ve been working since July 4 to get ready for this, we need to play an excellent match to qualify. It’s an obligation.

“The preliminaries are proving to be really demanding, then we’re entering a period where there will be a lot of matches, important ones too.

“Europe drains your energy, it’s true. In these three weeks we’ll try and secure it, that’s our primary objective.”
