Gian Piero Gasperini admits Atalanta “only played well in fits and starts” as their incredible winning streak came to an end with Juventus.

The Orobici had won six on the bounce, eight of the last nine Serie A rounds, before capitulating 3-1 in Turin this evening.

“We did not think that we were on the same level as Juve, so this game will help us understand what a gap there is separating us from the Bianconeri,” the Coach told Mediaset Premium and Sky Sport Italia.

Does this mean Atalanta are no longer dreaming of the Scudetto like an Italian Leicester City?

“Nobody talked about this. We won six consecutive matches, but Juventus are an extremely strong side and tonight was a test that will help us to grow for the future. It’s the foundations for going forward.

“Unfortunately we conceded two avoidable goals on corners and only played well in fits and starts. We ran into a Juventus side that was fired up and extremely determined.

“We were in the right condition to have a good game here, so I don’t know if it was Juve’s strength that pushed us back or our psychological weakness, but we have to analyse what happened and learn from it.

"What most irritates me is that against Juve you need to play as a unit, not as individuals, but instead we lost many individual duels."

These teams will meet again for the Coppa Italia Round of 16 in January.
