“We played with plenty of quality even if there is always something to improve, I am happy.

“This team has been built on very solid basis,” he added. “We’ve been working with a well-defined team for the last three years and with the help of everybody, also the new signings can settle in well.”

Atalanta can consider their star striker Josip Ilicic almost as a newcomer as the Slovenian star skipped the entire post-lockdown spell on the sidelines due to personal problems.

“He’s back to training with the team and everyone hopes to recover him also on a footballing level,” Gasperini said. “We are in no rush, but we hope he can get back after the International break.”

Atalanta are the team that plays the most attractive football in Serie A at the moment and there is a lot of excitement to see them in action against Liverpool, Ajax and Midtjylland in Champions League: “Liverpool and Ajax have prestigious stadiums but it’s a pity they will be empty. The 1000 fans who attended the game today made the difference, we hope fans will be allowed to return to the stadium as soon as possible.”
