La Dea registered an eighth consecutive Serie A victory, their fifth away win in a row, but Luis Muriel’s penalty proved the only goal against a Cagliari side reduced to 10 men for an hour.

“We lacked a bit of energy and sharpness, as we created so many chances and shouldn’t have been made to suffer like that to the final whistle,” said Gasperini in his press conference.

“We didn’t make the most of the advantage and I saw a little mental fatigue even more than physical. We were slow and imprecise, but still brought home the result and that’s to be treasured, because Walter Zenga’s Cagliari again showed they’ve got real quality.

“Maybe I made too many substitutions at once and should’ve left Muriel and Ruslan Malinovskyi on for a little longer. I’m glad Josip Ilicic is recovering, as he’s fundamental for us.

“We dominated the match, Cagliari defended well and kept it open right to the end.”

Lazio and Inter both lost this weekend, so Atalanta are just one point off third and five away from second.

“Our objective is to mathematically secure a Champions League place and set a new points record for this club. We’re a way off second place, but we can certainly give it some thought. It’s an enticing idea.”
