La Dea can still qualify for the Round of 16 if they beat Shakhtar Donetsk in Ukraine and hope Manchester City do not lose against Dinamo Zagreb.

This was their first ever Champions League victory, making up for the 4-0 opening defeat in Zagreb, sealed by a Luis Muriel penalty and Papu Gomez show-stopper.

“It was a narrow result, considering how much we dominated the match. We would’ve been happier with another couple of goals, but the important thing is that we won, we proved the 4-0 defeat in Zagreb was just a fluke and we’re giving a real sense to this Champions League campaign,” Gasp told Sky Sport Italia.

Atalanta didn’t just dominate, they had 24 shots on goal, nine of them on target.

“These evenings mean a lot to the players too, we all wanted to prove what we could do, just as we play in Serie A. We wanted this and players like Papu raise their game in these situations.

“It was a great performance all round from everybody.”

Muriel was not expected to start, but he led the way rather than Josip Ilicic as a False 9.

“He did well. We needed, considering the way Dinamo play, to have a centre-forward there providing a reference point for us. He too could’ve had more goals, but he always ran into space and caused danger to their defence.”
