Gian Piero Gasperini felt Atalanta ‘played an excellent match’ against Napoli, only focusing on securing a place in the Champions League next season.

The Orobici seem unstoppable after their seventh consecutive win, beating Napoli 2-0 thanks to goals from Mario Pasalic and Robin Gosens.

“We played an excellent match,” Gasperini told DAZN. “We had two results, we were a little lower than usual, but we didn’t have a lot of trouble.

“The only big chance for Napoli was the one from Fabian at the end. It was a game that shows we are able to defend, even if we remain lower.

“We did well in closing the spaces. In the second half, we decided the game through two quick goals.”

Gasperini praised captain Papu Gomez, who took his overall assist tally to 15 against the Partenopei.

“Today, he was particularly good at everything. Both him and Pasalic covered well and allowed our defence to have a great positioning.

“He has this extraordinary continuity. Depending on the moments of the game, Gomez can play in different roles. We are counting on [Josip] Ilicic to recover too. With him, we will have other solutions.”

Gasperini, who has taken the Orobici to the quarter-finals of the Champions League, insisted his men are fully focused on securing a place in the competition next season.

“The most important thing is the championship, to guarantee a place in the Champions League next year,” he said. “This year we started well, and we can repeat what we did.

“We have an important advantage. The Champions League will be played in August, but we can only increase our chances through our progress in the championship.

“The competition is on a frighteningly more difficult level, but we are growing and we will try to get in shape.”
