Gian Piero Gasperini said “the heart prevailed over the head” in his decision to extend the Genoa contract.

This is the tactician’s second spell at Marassi and he would’ve taken them into the Europa League, but administrative errors at the club level meant they were denied a UEFA licence.

“I am ready to face the new season,” said Gasp in a Press conference at the Museum of Genoa History.

“There would’ve been advantages to a different experience and thinking how much there was to lose after sixth place.

“Taking into account what Genoa represents, the fans who appreciate me and a club that lets me get on with my work, I decided in hope this is the right choice for me and Genoa.

“There were many thoughts racing through my mind, but in the end the heart prevailed over the head.

“It won’t be easy to repeat what we achieved this season, but we must start out with confidence and targeting specific objectives. Then we’ll see how the campaign evolves.

“We need to resume from the good work done so far, knowing that there will be a certain degree of reconstruction because many of the players are not fully owned by us.

“The President and the club want to turn over a new leaf after the UEFA licence situation. We have to look forward.”
