The Orobici are packed with young and practically unknown players, but are only one point off Roma in joint third place.

“We had a decent first half, we just had trouble keeping Mohamed Salah under control,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“In the second half we were simply extraordinary. We pushed forward and took risks, even if Roma barely threatened us, and it paid off.

“We had some good moves without the final pass, whereas Roma played with more quality. After the break we raised the intensity level and pinned Roma back into their own half.

“The credit is down to the fans, who created a wonderful atmosphere, and the players who worked at a high technical level.

“In the first half we allowed them more of the ball, but introduced Marco D’Alessandro for Andrea Masiello, a defender, and put more pressure on them.

“That tactic would be risky, but instead we only reaped the benefits of such an attacking approach.”

Atalanta have already beaten Napoli, Inter and Roma on home turf, winning six of the last seven rounds.

“I am struggling to say where we could go. I am dumbstruck myself! I’ve seen players grow with such confidence since pre-season and proved themselves against strong opponents.

“At this point we can’t say we just have to save ourselves, but it’s hard and we must keep our feet on the ground. At the same time, games like this really turn a season and stay with you.

“Europe would be difficult, as I see sides like Torino, Inter and Fiorentina with genuine potential. We’ll see how we continue. I qualified with Genoa, so maybe I can do it with Atalanta too.

“The enthusiasm around us truly extraordinary.”
