Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini says his Panchina d’Oro prize must be “shared with the city of Bergamo".

Gasperini won the Panchina d’Oro for the first time in his career, after a hugely impressive season in 2018-19 that saw La Dea finish third in Serie A and also reach the Coppa Italia final.

Gasperini has also guided his side into the Round of 16 in the Champions League this season, where they’ll meet Valencia.

“I am very happy, it’s a very prestigious prize, but it must be divided among all the city of Bergamo: staff, president and the fans. I am not the only one who works here,” said Gasperini at the event, held in Coverciano.

“I’ve come close to the award before, with Genoa and Atalanta. I’m happy because the award comes from fellow coaches.”

Sinisa Mihajlovic finished second behind Gasperini, and the coach says the Bologna boss is an example to everyone.

“He is winning and he will certainly win a battle much more important than a sporting event. A fight in which he has set the example for a lot of people in his own situation, doing it in the best way.”

Gasperini was asked whom did he vote for.

“I voted for Roberto D’Aversa. He did well in his first year in Serie A with Parma.”
