Gian Piero Gasperini has claimed Atalanta are ‘always fair and it wasn’t me who had to be sent off’ after a bad-tempered 1-0 win against Bologna.

Luis Muriel came off the bench to win the points for La Dea, but the spat between Sinisa Mihajlovic and Gasperini caught the attention during the post-match press conference.

“Let’s move on immediately, let’s talk about the match and Atalanta,” Gasperini told the reporters. “It was a difficult match. We are always fair, and it wasn’t me who had to be sent off.”

Gasperini highlighted the quality at his disposal in the Nerazzurri squad, as they leapfrogged Inter into second.

Bologna played well in the first 30 minutes, as we usually start in slow motion. Then we came out and we deservedly won.

“We don’t have many men on the bench but we have quality there. We have guys who train with us, who have made their debut and are doing well.

“It will be essential to maintain this concentration until the end.”

The coach confirmed that the Orobici must continue to wait for Josip Ilicic to fully recover.

“We must wait, but it’s clear that it’s a very serious loss for us.”

Atalanta continue to impress and extended their unbeaten run in Serie A to 15 games. Next month the Orobici will face Paris Saint-Germain in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

“There are three ways to prepare [for PSG]. The first is to play as much as possible to maintain the shape and thereafter we will have 12 days to think of doing a different job.

“The second is to give the players a week’s rest, while the third is somewhere in between the two.”
