Milan Vice-President Adriano Galliani has leapt to the defence of Rino Gattuso following his clash with Joe Jordan.

Gattuso was seen to raise his arms at the Tottenham assistant manager during the first leg of Milan's Champions League knock-out match on Tuesday evening.

He sought out Jordan again after the final whistle and attempted to head-butt the Scot.

UEFA plan to meet and discuss the incident on Monday with a view to meting out a punishment for Gattuso.

"What Rino did is an unpleasant episode which isn't OK, but he was strongly provoked.

"Sure, you needn't react like that but the whole thing has been stigmatised.

"We are not thinking about taking the vice-captaincy away from Gattuso. He'll keep it.

"By tomorrow Milan will enter it's defence and we'll ask that Gattuso's behaviour over the last 104 games be taken into account. Then we'll see what to do after the sentence."
