Roberto Gagliardini believes this season is “the last chance to bring Inter back to the top”.

The Nerazzurri once again missed out on the Champions League last term, but with an extra slot this year and Luciano Spalletti on the bench there is once again optimism at San Siro.

“Spalletti is right, this is the last chance to bring Inter back to the top,” Gagliardini told Gazzetta dello Sport.

“The objective is big this time. After last season we want to stay among the top positions.

“We have to understand that every game is worth three points, and to never give up. The others have strengthened, but we have everything to do well. We’ll see where we are at the end.

“We need more consistency of results, even before consistency of performances. Last year we stalled at some point, we had a notable decline.

“I don’t think we were always united. I think the problem was mostly mental.

“It’s time to change gear, Inter have been outside of the European competition which counts for too long. We can’t get it wrong anymore.

Can Spalletti be the man to turn things around?

“I think so, I haven’t known him for long but he’s already shown he has great personality. He’s very fired-up for this new experience, and we have everything to do.

“Spalletti hasn’t spoken to us all individually, but he’s been clear and straightforward in dealing with the group.

“In addition to his crazy grit, I’ve been struck by his preparation, he fires us up and advises us constantly in training.

“Going onto the pitch knowing exactly what you’re doing can make a big difference.”

Gagliardini was also asked about Ivan Perisic, who wants to leave the club for Manchester United.

“It’s not for me to say, I think he has an issue to resolve with the club. There’s nothing in the dressing room.”
