The Atalanta” data-scaytid=”23″>Atalanta striker had been ready to score with a glancing header from a corner when it was still 1-1 in Berne, but Ryan Bertrand’s goalline clearance sparked the counter-attack leading to Jermain Defoe’s winning goal.

“I was really annoyed as we could’ve taken home the win, but this is football. We have to learn the lessons from this defeat and do better next time,” said Gabbiadini.

“It would’ve been wonderful to mark my debut with a goal, but this is the way it went and there’s no point looking back over it now. One must accept results in football.

“I was ready and on the bench, so as soon as the Coach asked me to warm up I was off like a shot.”

Gabbiadini was one of six debutants in tonight’s Azzurri line-up.

“I have to compliment the ‘old’ players for giving us a warm welcome and helping us settle in.”
