Manolo Gabbiadini hopes his late winner to beat rivals Genoa can put Sampdoria on the right track and reveals why he didn’t start.

“It was wonderful, because we were coming off a complicated period,” Gabbiadini told DAZN.

“It was hard-fought, there were a lot of fouls, but I saw the corner and went for it. Fortunately, the ball went in.”

Claudio Ranieri surprised many by initially having Gabbiadini on the bench, but he reveals there was a good reason.

“I had a slight problem during the week and only really started training yesterday. You always want to play a game like this, so I am happy that I managed to come on and score the goal.”

This was his second goal in the Derby della Lanterna, the other also being a decisive 1-0 winner for Samp in 2014.

“We started the season badly and are not accustomed to being in that position, so we played in a tense way. Hopefully we can now put together a few wins in a row and begin to play with more freedom.”
