With the coronavirus pandemic causing a lockdown of all football in Europe, contingency plans are being worked out for how to resolve the issue of promotion and relegation if the calendar cannot be completed.

In Serie B, the top two are automatically promoted, while the third goes through a play-off system.

When the season was halted, Benevento were top on 69 points, Crotone 49 and Frosinone third with 47.

“If the league campaign should be interrupted and Frosinone wouldn’t go up because they are third in Serie B, then we are already preparing legal action for that eventuality,” President Stirpe told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“The only club that can even think about promotion due to sporting merit is Benevento, as they are virtually in Serie A anyway with a 20-point lead over second place.

“Obviously, we would prefer to avoid any legal wrangling, but seeing as there are many options on the table, we cannot rule out taking action through the courts.”

The idea of resuming the games behind closed doors to ensure the safety of fans and avoid large gatherings is also unsatisfactory for Frosinone.

“That seems ridiculous. Football must go forward in the right way. If it’s not safe, then having fans there or not seems irrelevant. This would destroy the sport of football, creating something with no appeal.

“It also looks absurd to me that the players will all be tested regularly for coronavirus when those tests could be used for those who really do need them.”
