Lorenzo Insigne was the inspiration with a goal and assist for Eljif Elmas, as Napoli beat Ascoli 2-1 in a pre-season friendly.

It took just seven minutes to break the deadlock, as Victor Osimhen was brought down for Insigne to convert the resulting penalty.

Piotr Zielinski’s strike thumped the base of the upright, but Ascoli equalised on a corner, with Mario Rui leaving Bidaoui unmarked at the back post, a familiar scene in Serie A last season.

Insigne was involved again for the winner, placing a smart low pass through a sea of legs for Elmas to dink it over the goalkeeper, just two minutes after the Macedonia international had come off the bench.

There was a double Napoli chance in the final minute, Gianluca Gaetano’s effort parried and Osimhen turning the rebound wide.
