Former Inter and Parma goalkeeper Sebastien Frey made a remarkable accusation, claiming former France coach Raymond Domenech ‘hated Italians and used us to annoy the clubs.’

Frey is French and spent much of his career in Italy, including with Verona, Fiorentina and Genoa.

He had four caps for France at Under-21 level and two for the senior squad, but accused Domenech of effectively sabotaging his international career over a strange grudge.

“I told Domenech in the Under-21 team that I no longer wanted to be in his squad,” Frey told TV Play.

“He forced me to miss Inter games for international duty only to then put me on the bench. It was me and Stephan Dalmat who were treated this way.

“Domenech told me that he hated Italians and that way he used us to annoy the Italian clubs.”

Domenech was the coach of the France Under-21 team from 1993 to 2004, then earned promotion to the senior role from 2004 until the summer of 2010.

During that experience, he lost the 2006 World Cup Final to Italy on a penalty shoot-out, after Zinedine Zidane saw red for head-butting Marco Materazzi in the chest.

If Frey’s accusations are true that Domenech had a particular dislike for Italians even in the Under-21 days, then losing that Final will have only exacerbated his strange grudge towards the Azzurri.
