Paulo Fonseca is content with Roma’s 1-1 draw against 10-man Atalanta, assuring nobody truly dominates La Dea.

The Giallorossi were grateful that their opponents wasted so many scoring opportunities, as after Robin Gosens saw red, Bryan Cristante was able to cancel out the Ruslan Malinovskyi opener.

“Playing against these teams is difficult, but we made mistakes in the decisive moments,” confessed Fonseca to DAZN.

“We didn’t win, but we did put in a good performance against a great team. Don’t forget, Atalanta won eight of their last nine games coming in and we decided to risk with a high press, not allowing Atalanta to build their moves in the usual way.

“We played better in the second half and the team showed character. I haven’t seen any team take on Atalanta and dominate possession.”

Borja Mayoral came on for the final stages as a partner to Edin Dzeko, but Fonseca warns that won’t be seen from the start.

“We already tried and it didn’t work. The team is not ready to play with two centre-forwards. It’s not important how many strikers you use, but also the players who create the moves. We have only one day to prepare every game and can’t afford such a big change.”

Roma have little time to prepare for the Europa League semi-final with Manchester United either.

“We played against Ajax and didn’t see much of the ball, but we had more of the ball than Atalanta in the first half today. Controlling the game is important to me.”
