Now, The Athletic reports the International Football Association Board (IFAB) is set to grant an extension later this week, covering the entirety of the 2020-21 campaign.

As per the website, world football’s lawmakers argue ‘the late start to next season will lead to the same player-welfare concerns’.

Two extra changes were initially seen as a benefit, but several Serie A coaches including Atalanta boss Gian Piero Gasperini have been vocal about their preference for three subs.

The general consensus is that the five-subs ruling favours bigger clubs with deeper squads.
