Patient Zero was discovered in Codogno, a small town near Lodi, 38-year-old Mattia Maestri.

It spread rapidly through the Lombardy region, then Italy and Europe.

The region went into lockdown on March 1, followed by a nationwide stay at home order eight days later.

Some regions are still under lockdown, as the second wave has been more ferocious than the first.
