Florence mayor Dario Nardella has revealed Fiorentina’s initial plans for a new 40,000-seater stadium costing over €300m.

La Viola, who first announced plans to develop a new ground in 2012, have been in tentative negotiations with city officials over taking over part or all of the Mercafir area, currently where Florence’s largest fruit and vegetable market are situated.

Today, in meeting with fellow city officials to discuss the club’s plans, the city’s mayor has revealed some of the particulars to the Serie A side’s intentions.

“The construction of a new stadium crosses over with the public life of a city,” explained Nardella in quotes picked up by ilsitodifirenze.it.

“We know that today the only source of revenue for a football club is represented by television rights.

“I think that Italy should adapt like other European cities, with facilities that are modern and that can be a direct resource for a great football club, so that they are not bound only to the revenue from television.

“Fiorentina have requested the south and north of the entire Mercafir area,” continued the mayor, in explaining that this may affect initial plans to build the city’s new market in the north of that area.

“The stadium is estimated to be for 40,000 spectators and will be entirely covered. La Viola are studying an investment of €305.8m that can guarantee thousands of jobs.

“We have before us an opportunity that we cannot miss – Florence can send a message to the rest of Italy.”
