Fiorentina players were stunned by a series of earthquakes, but Sunday’s game with Empoli is not currently at risk.

The city was shaken by several earthquakes since last night, an unusual occurrence for the Tuscan capital, with the epicentre in the Chianti area.

The strongest quake registered 4.1 on the Richter Scale at 10.36 GMT and was followed by at least 130 smaller aftershocks.

Borja Valero described what he experienced during the worst quake. “The whole house shook and things fell from the shelves. Either it’s ghosts or an earthquake.”

Manuel Pasqual kept it brief: “Damn… earthquake.”

Several schools have been closed in the area and some buildings evacuated.

On Sunday afternoon Fiorentina are due to face local rivals Empoli in the Derby di Toscana.

As of Friday evening, the authorities assured the game would only be called off if there were more significant tremors.
