A Fiorentina fan who was attending the derby between Sporting CP and Benfica has been killed after clashes between supporters in Lisbon.

Sporting Club de Portugal released a statement to confirm the 41-year-old died last night, but noted the police are investigating and “the club does not feel it is responsible for what happened.

“We do wish the fan’s family our most heartfelt condolences.”

Fiorentina have long been twinned with Sporting and the supporter had been in Lisbon to attend today’s derby.

According to various reports, he was hit by a car when trying to escape running battles between Sporting and Benfica fans near the stadium.

At this point, the others ran away and left him in the road.
