It didn’t take long for Real Madrid to give their reply, as Cristiano Ronaldo rolled across for Borja Mayoral to tap in unmarked.

The hosts were pouring forward, but almost caught out when Davide Astori’s astonishing overhead kick came off the crossbar.

However, CR7 was in a mood to play during his five-match Liga ban and scored a sensational second. He flew down the left and cut inside to fire a rocket into the far top corner from a tight angle.

Stefano Pioli fielded an all-new XI in the second half and Real Madrid continued to pour forward, but ran risks at the back with Marco Benassi hitting the side-netting.

Real Madrid goalkeeper Luca Zidane – son of the Coach – dropped a clanger and was fortunate Benassi didn’t make the most of it.

Dragowski was at full stretch to turn away an Isco angled drive and Ronaldo hit the rebound on to the upright.

Alvaro Tejero and Gareth Bale skimmed the woodwork, but Zekhnini just failed to get on the end of a dangerous Benassi cross.

There were concerns in stoppages, as Carlos Sanchez went off with a knee injury.
