Reconstruction work on Torino’s historic Stadio Filadelfia will finally begin on October 17.

The stadium was host to the Grande Torino side of the 1940s which won five consecutive Scudetti, but fell into disrepair after the Granata move to Stadio Comunale in 1963.

The players continued to train in the old stadium until 1989, but it has been completely abandoned since the youth side stopped training there.

Several projects to renovate the stadium have fallen through, but today it was confirmed that work will finally begin next month.

CS Costruzioni has won the right to rebuild the Filadelfia, which will serve as Toro’s training ground, as well hosting primavera matches and the club’s museum.

“I first walked through these gates in 1975,” Torino director general Antonio Comi told a Press conference.

“Everything here exudes history and glory, it’s wonderful to know that it will come back to life.”

The project is expected to take a year, with the new ground opening on October 17, 2016.
