Ion, who plays for Italy’s wheelchair basketball team and is of Romanian extract, was racially abused by a passer-by, while her father was assaulted for trying to defend her.

“My full support goes out to Beatrice, the victim of a disgusting assault,” Spadafora wrote on Facebook.
“The young lady, of Romanian origin, plays for Italy’s wheelchair basketball team and, as she herself says, she was physically attacked and racially abused with her family.
“Now, her father has a broken cheekbone. I’m really sorry to hear about this and I hope those responsible are brought to justice soon.”
The politician, who was born in Naples, also commented on the incident that saw Atalanta’s Mirco Moioli call a Napoli supporter ‘terrone’ – an insult aimed at someone from southern Italy.
“Added to this is the ugly incident involving the Atalanta team manager, for which the FIGC’s prosecutor has already rightly begun proceedings.”
