The Sardinians went down after a 1-0 home defeat to Palermo this afternoon, ending 11 years in the top flight.

“It’s a shame for the fans, as it’s not nice to get relegated,” said Festa in his Press conference.

“Above all it is tough to get back into Serie A. I know, because I experienced it as a player. In sport you have to accept defeat and find the strength to get back up.

“We need to turn over a new leaf and I say this with great pain, because as well as being their Coach I am a big Cagliari fan.

“It would be an honour and a privilege to remain as Cagliari Coach in Serie B. If the club decides against that, then I thank the President and directors for this opportunity.”

Festa is a former Cagliari star and took over last month with the situation already in crisis.

The club started its season under Zdenek Zeman, then brought in Gianfranco Zola in December and re-hired Zeman in March.

The tactician resigned, paving the way for Festa to get his debut Serie A management job.
