Ebullient Sampdoria President Massimo Ferrero confirmed he’s rehearsing for a role on the Italian version of Dancing with the Stars. “I can do the splits!”

The programme, called Strictly Come Dancing in the UK and Ballando con le Stelle in Italy, sees celebrities learn and perform a dance routine with a professional partner.

“The objective of my participation is solely for charity,” Ferrero told Vanity Fair.

“With the money given to me by RAI, and if necessary with more of my own cash, I want to buy at least four ambulances to give to hospitals, starting with the Gaslini children’s hospital in Genoa, with which we already collaborate.

“I am not going on TV to be famous, as I don’t need it. Everyone loves me, I am a man of heart, simple. At the age of 15-16 I was penniless and went to the Bar Veneto in via Ostiense, where there was a modern jukebox. I’d put on three songs, dance around and my friend would pick up loose change people gave us, so then we’d go to the cinema.

“I also danced rock’n’roll, the cha-cha, the tango. I even did the splits! At home I’d put two chairs out to practice stretching out my legs, but then my mother would shout that I ought to be studying instead.

“I’m a little rusty, but I am already in training. I go running in the morning, do exercise, follow a diet – and I’m putting the chairs out again to try the splits.”
