Sampdoria President Massimo Ferrero apologised after saying Massimo Moratti should’ve “kicked out that Filipino” Erick Thohir.

The new owner of Samp was speaking to Rai Sport when he discussed Moratti’s decision to resign as Honorary Inter President.

“It’s not right that Moratti was treated this way. I am very sad for him. I had told him: kick out that Filipino…”

Inter President Thohir is a businessman from Indonesia who already owns MLS club DC United.

Intimating it was a joke, Ferrero added: “He came from Indonesia to insult a symbol of football. I like Thohir, really, but nobody must insult Moratti.”

Ferrero later released a statement via the official Sampdoria website.

“I did not want to show a lack of respect for Mr Thohir, the Inter directors or the people of the Philippines, who I have always had a wonderful rapport with.

“I was trying to praise Massimo Moratti and all he has given to Inter and Italian football for 20 years. He also brought Italy’s most recent international trophies, exporting our sport in the world.”

Ferrero, a movie producer, is no stranger to controversy and has already become a fixture on Italian television with his outlandish behaviour.
