“Good evening my friends,” wrote Ferrero in a statement on the Sampdoria website.

“Today something happened that is incredible (yet true!) and unfortunately we’re not on Candid Camera.

“I thank all the fans of all the Italian clubs that my Samp & Doria has met and will meet, for the fondness and respect shown towards me.

“I would also like to thank Italian referees who every Sunday, even under crazy pressure and at times even intimidation and violence, ensure the rules of the sport are respected on every pitch. Without those rules that were set over a century ago, this would not be the most beautiful, loved and followed sport in the world.

“Thank you to everyone! Your President, Massimo Ferrero.”
