The 37-year-old blamed a knee injury for forcing him to hang up his boots.
“I am very sad. Football is everything for me in my life,” he said.
It's believed Canna will stay on at Al-Ahli as a technical advisor, as he had one more year of his contract left to run.
The defender started his career at hometown club Napoli, where younger brother Paolo still plays.
He went on to feature for Parma, Inter, Juventus” data-scaytid=”12″>Juventus, Real Madrid and joined Al-Ahli in the summer of 2010.
Cannavaro remains Italy's all-time most capped international with 136 games, beating the record previously held by Paolo Maldini.
The rugged centre-back took part in four World Cup competitions and lifted the trophy in 2006, along with the Ballon d'Or and FIFA World Player of the Year award.
