Former Sassuolo midfielder Junior Hamed Traore, linked with a move to Lazio, will be out of action ‘for some time’ after he contracted malaria, confirmed Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola.

The brother of former Atalanta and current Manchester United forward Amad Diallo, Traore contracted malaria during the November international break and started to show symptoms after his return to England.

He was left out of the Ivory Coast squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations, which kicks off on January 13.

The Ivory Coast international will turn 24 in February and moved to Italy as a child, coming up through the Empoli youth academy.

He joined Sassuolo and was then sold to Bournemouth after an initial loan period for a total €25.6m in 2023.

Traore has struggled to make an impact with the Cherries, managing only six appearances this season between the Premier League and EFL Cup.

He still contributed a goal, but had been linked with a January return to Serie A on loan to Lazio.
